Wendy Struck at Jennie Emery School, Coaldale

We ventured out to Coaldale Alberta with When We Were Young artist Wendy Struck, to work with students at Jennie Emery Elementary School. Wendy spoke in detail about her practice, explaining her approach to assemblage painting, which was also the inspiration for our workshop project. Wendy’s assemblage paintings combine paint, transfers, found objects, collected artefacts and more. The artist states that she “create(s) as a means to document,” a gesture that has a long historical tradition, from cave paintings to present day photojournalism. Wendy provided a hands on demonstration, explaining each step of projects process. At the end of the day, eighty grade two students had immersed themselves in creating a mixed media collage using a variety of speciality papers, photographs and found objects. We had a great time!
