Wendy Struck at Rolling Hills School
We ventured out to Rolling Hills Alberta with When We Were Young artist Wendy Struck, to work with students at Rolling Hills Elementary School. Wendy spoke in detail about her practice, explaining her approach to assemblage painting, which was also the inspiration for our workshop project. Wendy’s assemblage paintings combine paint, transfers, found objects, collected artefacts and more. The artist states that she “create(s) as a means to document,” a gesture that has a long historical tradition, from cave paintings to present day photojournalism. This activity invited students to engage in a deeper conversation about memory and sentimentality while employing some of the same unique techniques as the artist uses. Everyone was engaged and creative, we had a great time!
